Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, the first great sheng solo work,the phoenix spreads its wings, and a contemporary piece by hong kong composer ng cheuk-yin, tiger sketch, and everyone will get to hear the pureand unique sounds of the traditional sheng. the traditional sheng has a history of morethan 3000 years.

if you attend a chinese orchestra performance,you will see the soprano sheng, the alto sheng and the tenor sheng. these instruments were modified over the past decades to increase its range andvolume so as to suit the performance needs of the orchestra. however, the traditional sheng’s advantagelies in its pure and earthly tone, and how it allows the use of more complicated playing techniques. for example in grand prelude, it uses accent,grace notes and simple polyphony techniques; whereas in chanson, the unique glissando isused. these are techniques that the reformed shengsare unable to achieve.
